tumblr has always been populated by insufferable tumblr elitists, but they've only become even more difficult to tolerate since Elon Musk's acqusition of the bird hellsite. if i unfollowed every person who was being like that, my dashboard would be pretty much empty. starting to strongly consider just deleting my account entirely... not quite at the point of acting on it yet, but i may reach that point soon. the vast majority of things people praise tumblr for and treat as "unique" to tumblr are just things that are part of interacting with other people online in general. the funny quips? the riffing off each other? the chains of funny stuff? livejournal comments had those years before tumblr even existed. hilarious forum threads with the same energy as those "unique" tumblr posts have been around as long as forums. tumblr has no monopoly on the human condition or humor, though most of the people who use it are entirely convinced otherwise. using their own humor, it's just the guy who's only seen the boss baby movie seeing a second movie: getting a lot of 'boss baby' vibes from this movie...
thing happening. maybe use some other websites. very little about tumblr is unique except for how much of the userbase looks down their nose at users on other platforms.
i just wish i could escape it. even when i find a new blog run by someone who seems cool and fun, i give it a cursory scrollthrough to make sure i didn't miss them being bigoted, and nearly all of them will eventually have some reblog of absolutely ridiculous tumblr elitist bullshit. i've wondered why the particular way this manifests feels so familiar, and recently realized tumblr exceptionalism is extremely similar to the ignorant American exceptionalism you become unfortunately used to when interacting with Americans in any context. what a surprise.
tumblr users sure are made of the most concentrated of hubris for users of a closed-source, corporate-owned website noticeably on the decline with blogs that have no way of being restored online even when they manage to successfully export. but i guess when your head's that far in the sand...
